§01What reinforcement does
Concrete carries compressive load well and tensile load badly. Any slab that is loaded, shrinks or moves will eventually crack; the tensile force at the crack has to go somewhere. Reinforcement gives it somewhere to go. Rebar, mesh and fiber all do the same job — they hold the two sides of a crack together so the slab keeps working — and they differ in cost, in placement effort, and in the loads they carry.
No reinforcement stops shrinkage. Shrinkage is controlled by the mix (see Mix selection) and by joint planning (see Joint planning). Reinforcement is what keeps the slab together once the shrinkage crack finds its joint.
§02Rebar — when and how
Rebar is deformed steel bar, tied into a grid, held in the middle third of the slab thickness on chairs or dobies. It is the choice where the slab carries load — from a truck, from a building, from a wall.

Working rules Local Concrete Charlotte pours to:
- Tied at every intersection with 16-gauge tie wire.
- Chairs or dobies every 3 feet — the steel sits in the middle third of the slab, not on the subgrade.
- Lap length at splices: 30 bar diameters minimum (18″ on #3, 24″ on #4). Longer on structural work per the engineer.
- Cover: 3″ from the subgrade side, 2″ from any formed face, on residential slabs. Structural covers per the engineer.
§03Wire mesh — when and how
Welded wire mesh is 6″×6″ or 4″×4″ grid, either flat sheet or rolled. It carries less tensile load than a rebar mat and it costs less to place. On flatwork and residential slabs that do not carry vehicle load it is the working choice.

The single rule that decides whether mesh works: it has to be held off the subgrade on chairs at 3-foot centers. Mesh sitting on the ground during placement is mesh doing nothing — the concrete pours over it, the mesh stays under the slab, and it is not in the middle third where it can do its job. This is the most common installation failure with mesh, and it is a working-crew problem, not a materials one.
Rolled mesh is not used on Local Concrete Charlotte pours — it recoils out of the pour and never sits flat. Flat-sheet mesh only.
§04Fiber — synthetic and steel
Fiber reinforcement is short strands mixed into the concrete at the plant. It reinforces the paste at the micro scale, controls plastic-shrinkage cracks, and gives the slab a secondary tensile network.

§06Placement rules that hold across all three
- The reinforcement is in the middle third of the slab thickness — not on the subgrade, not touching the surface. Held there with chairs or dobies before the concrete lands.
- Splices are lapped, not butted. Lap length is 30 bar diameters on rebar and one full grid square on mesh.
- Concrete cover is preserved at every edge — 2″ from a formed face, 3″ from a subgrade or earthen face.
- Reinforcement is not walked on once the concrete is pouring. If it moves, it is re-set before more concrete is placed over it.
- Every rebar and mesh choice is recorded on the job sheet and cross-checked in the pour-day checklist (LCCBCC-PD-I §04).

Does Local Concrete Charlotte pour driveways with mesh instead of rebar?
No. Driveways carry vehicle load; the reinforcement choice is a rebar mat, #3 or #4 depending on the load class. Mesh is for flatwork and light residential slabs that do not carry vehicles.
Does fiber replace mesh?
Macro-fiber can replace mesh on some slabs when the job sheet or an engineer specifies it. Micro-fiber controls plastic-shrinkage cracks but does not replace primary reinforcement.
Why hold mesh off the subgrade?
So it sits in the middle third of the slab. Mesh laying on the ground when the concrete pours over it stays under the slab and does nothing. This is the most common installation failure with mesh.
