How does Local Concrete Charlotte plan joints?
Control joints spaced 24 to 36 times the slab thickness (8 to 12 feet on a 4-inch slab), saw-cut 6 to 18 hours after placement to one quarter the slab depth. Expansion joints against every abutting slab, wall, footing or column, and at 25 to 50 foot intervals on large runs. Never in the same line — control joints and expansion joints do different jobs. §01Two joints, two jobs
Concrete does two things after it is poured. It shrinks as it cures, and it moves with temperature and humidity over the years that follow. Two joints handle those two things and they are not interchangeable.

Control joints and expansion joints do not go in the same line. A control joint that lines up with an expansion joint is either redundant, or it is an expansion joint in the wrong place — a control joint is not full-depth and it does not accommodate movement.
§02Control-joint spacing
The working rule is: control joints are spaced 24 to 36 times the slab thickness, and no panel is more than 1.5 times as long as it is wide. Long thin panels crack across their short dimension whether the joint is there or not.

Panels squarer than 1.5:1 is a stronger rule than the raw spacing number. A driveway that is 12 feet wide and 30 feet long is jointed at 10-foot centers along its length, cutting the run into three 10×12 panels, not left as one 30×12 slab with a single joint down its middle.
§03Expansion-joint placement
Expansion joints are placed where the slab abuts anything that will not move with it, or on long runs where the slab has to move against itself.
- Against every foundation wall, footing, column or foundation slab.
- Against every existing abutting slab — the joint between a new drive and an existing garage floor is an expansion joint.
- Around every fixed penetration — a support post, a bollard, a light pole in the middle of a slab.
- On long continuous runs — a driveway over 50 feet, a sidewalk over 100 feet — at 25 to 50 foot intervals.
The joint is full-depth and filled with a compressible material — closed-cell foam, fiber-board expansion joint, or a preformed cork strip. A control-joint cut cannot replace an expansion joint; a saw-cut joint is not full-depth and it does not accommodate long-term movement.
§04Saw-cut vs tooled
Control joints are formed one of two ways.

Saw-cut joints hold cleaner over the years, cut straighter, and go to a controlled depth. They are the working choice on any slab over 200 sq ft. Tooled joints work on small slabs but they do not hold on driveways or large flatwork — the tool bevels the surface without cutting deep enough to control the crack.

A joint cut too shallow does not control the crack — the slab cracks where it wants to and the joint runs alongside the crack. A joint cut too late is a joint cut into a slab that has already cracked on its own line.
§06Joint layout on a job — worked example
Take a 12′×24′ residential concrete driveway with an attached-garage abutment at one end and a street apron at the other.
- Panel layout — three panels of 12′×8′, cut across the drive at 8 feet and 16 feet from the garage. Panel aspect 1:1.5, within rule.
- Control joints — saw-cut at 8′ and 16′, 1″ deep on a 4″ slab, run edge-to-edge across the 12′ width, cut in the 6–18 hour window after placement.
- Expansion joints — one along the garage abutment, one along the street apron, one full-perimeter around any drain grate or bollard in the slab. Filled with fiber-board expansion joint or closed-cell foam.
- Edge tooling — edger run around the whole perimeter and along every control-joint line during finish for a soft edge that does not chip.
