§01PSI by application
PSI — pounds per square inch of compressive strength at 28 days — is the headline value on a mix design. It is picked against the application, not against the price of the truck.

The line above the number matters as much as the number. A 4000-psi mix for a stamped patio is not the same design as a 4000-psi mix for a foundation footing; the admixture package is different and the aggregate is graded differently.
§02Aggregate size
Aggregate size is picked against the slab thickness and the reinforcement spacing. A rule of thumb: the largest aggregate is no more than one third the slab thickness, and no more than three quarters of the clear spacing between reinforcement bars.
- 3/4-inch aggregate for driveways, foundations and flatwork at 4″+ thickness.
- 1/2-inch aggregate for thin toppings, decorative overlays, or slabs with tight rebar spacing.
- 3/8-inch aggregate for stamped surfaces where the aggregate would otherwise print through the pattern.
§03Slump target
Slump is the workability of the mix out of the truck. Too dry and it cannot be placed; too wet and the water-cement ratio is off, strength drops, shrinkage cracks show up.

Slump is checked with a slump-cone at the truck. Water is not added at the site to increase slump; a mid-range or high-range plasticizer is used instead.
§04Air entrainment
Air entrainment is a package of admixtures that puts microscopic air bubbles into the mix. The bubbles give freeze-thaw water somewhere to expand into without cracking the paste.
- Exterior slabs in Charlotte — driveway, patio, pool deck — air-entrained to 5–7 % on north- and west-facing exposure and on any slab that will hold snow.
- Interior slabs — not air-entrained (air entrainment reduces trowel-finish strength).

§06How the mix is specified
