§01Weather at the site
The first check is the weather forecast at the site over the placement window and the twenty-four hours after it.

The weather call is made before the truck is called. It is faster to move the pour than to explain a plastic-shrinkage crack pattern to a homeowner after the fact.
§02Subgrade check
The subgrade is checked against the spec on the job sheet before the concrete is on the way. The full subgrade spec sits at Subgrade preparation.
- Compaction — proof-rolled with a plate compactor or jumping jack, no soft spots underfoot.
- Grade — checked with a straight edge or laser against the finish elevation.
- Drainage — no ponded water on the pad; positive fall away from any structure.
- Vapor barrier — in place under any slab that will be inside a heated space or a pool deck close to a house.
- Aggregate base — depth and lift confirmed to the spec on the job sheet.
§03Forms and edge-of-form
Forms are set and staked before the reinforcement is placed. The edge-of-form is where a slab loses shape first if the check is missed.
- String line pulled and edge-of-form checked against it every 8–10 feet.
- Corner stakes doubled; long runs staked at 4-foot centers or tighter.
- Form height set for the finished thickness — 4″ residential drives, 6″ commercial/heavy-vehicle, per the job sheet.
- Form release applied on any form that will be stripped and reused.
- Expansion joint material set against any abutting slab, wall, footing or column before pour.
§04Reinforcement in position
The reinforcement is placed against the choice recorded on the job sheet — rebar, wire mesh or fiber. The full spec sits at Reinforcement choices.
- Rebar tied at every intersection, on chairs or dobies to hold the steel in the middle third of the slab.
- Wire mesh held off the subgrade on chairs — mesh sitting on the ground during placement is the same as no mesh at all.
- Lap length checked at every splice — 18 inches minimum on #3 or #4 bar for a residential slab, longer per the job sheet on structural work.
- Fiber, if specified, confirmed in the mix ticket at the truck.
§05Mix delivery and slump at the truck
The mix ticket is checked at the truck before the chute goes down.

Water added at the site to make placement easier is the most common cause of a slab that fails a strength check at 28 days. The mix design is what is placed.
§06Placement, screed and bull-float
Placement is done in the pattern the forms and reinforcement were laid out for.
- Placement in continuous strips against the reinforcement — no cold-joint through a slab that was designed as one pour.
- Vibration where the slab thickness or reinforcement density calls for it; over-vibration segregates the mix.
- Screed pulled along the forms in a single pass where possible; a second pass corrects only high spots.
- Bull-float run once bleed water begins to leave the surface; no bull-floating a surface that is still bleeding.
§07Finishing call
The finishing call is made once the bleed water has left and the surface is firm enough to hold a foot with a shallow print. The choice is on the job sheet and is set against the application. The full finish spec sits at Finishing techniques.
- Broom finish for driveways and outdoor flatwork — for traction underfoot and under tires.
- Exposed-aggregate for patios and decorative surfaces where the aggregate is graded to be seen.
- Trowel finish for interior slabs and where a smooth surface is called for.
- Stamped finish over a colored slab, applied in the window the slab holds a stamp cleanly.
§08Saw-cut window and cure kick-off
Before the crew leaves, the saw-cut window is noted and the cure regime is kicked off. The full spec sits at Joint planning and Curing and sealing.
- Saw-cut window — typically 6–18 hours after placement in normal weather; cut sooner in hot weather, later in cold.
- Cure kick-off — curing compound sprayed on the fresh surface, or cure blankets pulled over where the weather calls for it.
- Barrier — cones, tape and any wheel-load barrier in place before the crew leaves. Foot traffic no earlier than 24 hours, vehicle traffic no earlier than 7 days, heavy vehicle 28 days.

Why is the weather check first?
Because it is the only check that cannot be corrected once the truck is on the way. Every other check on the list can be adjusted at the site; the weather cannot.

When can foot traffic go on a fresh slab?

Why saw-cut instead of tooled joints?
Saw-cut joints are cleaner and set in the exact position the slab will crack anyway. Tooled joints work on small slabs but do not hold on driveways or flatwork over 400 sq ft.
What is the cure kick-off?
The step before the crew leaves — curing compound sprayed on, cure blankets pulled if weather calls for it, barriers in place. The slab loses cure water faster in the first 24 hours than in the following six days combined.
